The 2008 Vacation Scholarship Program is designed to provide students
with the opportunity to work on real-world problems in a leading R&D
organisation. Participation in the Vacation Scholarship Program has
influenced previous scholarship holders in their choice of further study
and future career options. Many have gone on to pursue a PhD in CSIRO or
to build a successful research career within CSIRO, a University or
industry.
The scholarships are open to students who have completed at least 3
years of Undergraduate study and who have maintained a credit average or
higher. The students will be paid a stipend of $550 per week.
Scholarships are to commence early December 2008 and continue for a
period of 8-12 weeks. Each student will undertake a research project
under the supervision of a research scientist or engineer. Presentation
skills training is provided as well as an opportunity to participate in
an end of scholarship conference with other students and CSIRO research
scientists.

3 PhD Scholarships in Computational Engineering (Electronic Device Modelling)

The Project: The three-year program of research is targeting the development of C++ codes for the analysis, design, modelling and simulation of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) Devices for high-tech electronic applications. The candidates will be working in a research group which has extensive expertise in computational engineering and has pioneered the development of models for device simulation in Europe, United States and South East Asia since 1979.
The Person: Applicants will need a degree with honours in either Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Applied Science, have extensive experience in C++ programming language and algorithm design, and be mathematically minded. Successful applicants will preferably commence by early January 2008. These scholarships are available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

This project combines Bayesian filtering theory with stochastic geometry to address the problem of tracking multiple-object tracking in video sequences. The Bayesian framework is employed for its suitability to on-line implementation and its adaptability to the fusion of heterogeneous sources of information. The stochastic geometric modelling provides a solid foundation for the systematic study of the problem and allows principled approximations to made. Stochastic geometrical models, including deformable templates and point processes have long been used by statisticians to develop techniques for object recognition in static images [24]. However, their use has been largely overlooked in the tracking area until recently. In tracking with point measurements, an approximation based on point process theory known as the Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter has been shown to alleviate the data association problem and remove the bulk of the computational load [25-28]. In this project we will develop a PHD-type filter for video data to arrive at an efficient algorithm for tracking multiple objects.

Our aim is to study the essential (and ubiquitous) problem of automatically segmenting visual data into meaningful parts - a form of model fitting: but in the face of multiple objects, missing and noisy data, large data volumes, and unknown form (model) and number of objects. These latter characteristics lift the problem beyond the reach of standard statistical fitting approaches.
There have been studies concentrating on optimal fitting (Kanatani 1996) (ignoring such things as outliers, multiple structures, data sample density etc.), or on robust fitting in the presence of multiple structures ((Meer 2004) not only provides a good overview if these approaches but also a good discussion of why traditional robust statistics is inadequate for such a setting) but generally ignoring small sample issues, model selection, and a plethora of other practical issues. This project is an ambitious attempt to provide a more complete theory and practical methodology.
The project will focus on range data (i.e., laser scan and 3D reconstruction from images) and motion estimation/segmentation. It will build upon the work of the team (see references below).

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and PhD Scholarship in Service-Oriented

The Centre for Information Technology Research (CITR) at Swinburne has the
following two research positions in Service-Oriented Architectures available
immediately:
* A Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Fellow (academic level A or B),
* An APAI PhD Scholarship ($30k pa stipend).
These researchers are to join a research project investigating Rich Service
Registries (RSR), funded by the ARC and CA (Computer Associates).
The Rich Service Registries will be the centre piece of future enterprise
information systems deploying the service-oriented architecture. The project
aims to create an extensible framework for rich service registries that
allow an enterprise's IT services to be characterised, located and managed
according to their business and system properties in an intelligent and
dynamic manner. It provides methods, techniques and a software platform for
service modelling, quality/policy-based service discovery through direct and
compositional matching, service lifecycle management, auditing and legal
compliance of services and applications from an enterprise perspective.
The research fellow is expected to play a key role in the project, and must
have a broad appreciation of the project issues as well as in-depth
expertise in some of the key research topic areas. The position is available
for a period of three years.
The PhD candidate is expected to carry out research in one of the project's
key research topic areas. The scholarship is available for a period of three
years, with a high value stipend of $30,000 per year plus other travel and
research support. The applicant must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen
or an Australian permanent resident, and have a good honours (4 years)
degree or equivalent in software engineering, computer science or
information technology.

Australian Postgraduate Research Scholarships
For International students:
You are eligible to apply for
1. Scholarship that covers your course fees
2. Scholarship that covers your living expenses - normally from aud15k to 19k per annum
Scholarships that covers your course fees:
1. Endeavour International Postgraduates Research Scholarships (Endeavour IRPS)
- covers your visa application fees, your health insurance and waive your course fees (around 20k per annum)
2. University's IPRS
- usually paid by the uni's Graduate School. eg. MIPRS - Monash IPRS
If the above fails - try to get the Faculty to pay 50% of the fees, and get the Department to pay 50% of the fees. Or, get the supervisor to help using the grants, or the research center he/she belongs to.
Scholarship that covers your living stipend:
1. Graduate Scholarships from University's Graduate Schools.
eg. MGS (Monash Graduate Scholarships). The amount is different every year - I think there's an increment of 3% due to the inflation rate. It's around aud19k for 2007.
2. Top up scholarships from Research Centers.
Some projects allow top up scholarships (usually industrial projects), and it's around 6k per annum. So if you get both, you will get around 25k per annum - tax-free!
However, with scholarships, there are restrictions - you can't work for more than 6 hours per week in average. If you work as a tutor, you will normally get paid at aud90 for the 1st hour, and aud60 for the repeating hours. Ask me more bout this if you are interested. Anyway, if you teaches a 2 hours tutorials and two repeating classes:
aud90*2 + aud60*4= aud420per week.
Therefore, you will get around 1680per month
the living stipend without top up is around aud1.5k per month, adding the part time job - you get around 3.2k per month to spend - more than enough for livings I suppose!
(you only get taxed for any income more than 6k per year and that only applies to your part time job since your living stipend is tax-free)

The Foundation invites grant applications from students in agricultural science, natural resource management, agricultural economics or social science who are currently enrolled in approved Masters or Doctorate degrees with research that relates to the management and control of feral rabbits or to the species or ecosystems that are affected by feral rabbits.
Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and may provide up to $5000 to support:
· overseas travel for a study tour; OR
· attending and presenting research results at a relevant international or national conference; OR
· a visit by an eminent overseas scientist, working on rabbits or in a related field, to Australia to mentor the student and address Australian and/or regional conferences; OR
· the purchase of essential equipment required for the post-graduate, rabbit-related research and development project.
The Grant is open to Australian citizens or students that have been continuously resident in Australia for two years immediately preceding the closing date for applications. Applicants must be currently enrolled Masters or PhD students.
Applications for grants to be awarded in 2008 are due by close of business Friday 26th October 2007 and the successful applicant will be announced in December 2007.

Foundation Grants in 2008
In 2008, research grants will be available for research in the fields of brain sciences, diabetes, geriatrics, lung diseases (excluding cancer) rheumatology, vision sciences and in the medical application of genetic research.
The value of the grants is between $8,000 and $20,000. These limits will be strictly adhered to and the grant preferably, but not exclusively, for specific equipment. A commitment for continued support cannot be given.
Guidelines and application forms are available from the Foundation’s website and from the Research Offices of most Universities or Research Institutions.
Closing date: Friday 5 October 2007.

Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation Limited
The Rebecca L Cooper Medical Research Foundation is offering a scholarship, to commence in 2008, for young science and medical graduates. The scholarship will be granted for the undertaking of a thesis study in the medical applications of Genetic Research at a recognised Australian University. The Scholarship is intended to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and/or overseas.
The scholarship will be granted for one year and be renewable for three years depending on satisfactory progress. Applicants should be about to commence their PhD or be in their first year.
Applications should include a 2-3 page summary of their research proposal, their CV, as well as a letter from their proposed supervisor and one other referee.
Closing date for these applications is 31 July 2007.
Applicants will be advised of their success or otherwise by the end of September 2007.

2008 General Sir John Monash Awards

The Awards are Australia’s equivalent to the prestigious Rhodes scholarship and the American Fulbright programme.
The Awards offer up to $150,000 over three years for postgraduate studies (PhD, DPhil or professional Masters Degree) at any of the world’s best universities overseas.
Only eight Awards are made each year to Australian citizens adjudged to have outstanding academic achievement, community consciousness and service and leadership potential of their field and the community. The Foundation expects Award winners to make a significant contribution to the future development of Australia.
There is no restriction on the age of applicants or the fields of study. The average age of past winners is 26 and they have come from universities across Australia including from the fields of: Science; Engineering, Law, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Social Studies, Medicine, Health, Philosophy, Arts and Music.

Gowrie Scholarship Trust Fund – Research Scholarship 2008
The Trustees offer annual Research Scholarships for research study, to graduates of Australian universities, or to other persons who have completed a course of tertiary education at other recognised institutions in Australia.
Applications for the Scholarship close on 3 October, 2007 (University is required to rank applications in order of merit).
In accordance with the Trust Deed, Gowrie Scholarships will be awarded to members of the Forces, and children of members of the Forces, including, at the direction of the Trustees, grandchildren or other lineal descendants of such members.
The value of the scholarship is $4,000 per annum. Scholarships are awarded for a period of two years.

PhD Scholarship Investigating Mental Health in Athletes
The Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF) invites applications for a PhD scholar investigating Mental Health in Athletes. In particular, the research should address suicide in middle-aged men with a focus on help seeking and/or mental health in high-level athletes.
