Scholarship forms

Short entry for today - sharing some links of the scholarship forms for research studies in Australian universities in Victoria state:

Latrobe Uni:
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/rgso/scholarships.htm#Scholarships

RMIT:
http://mams.rmit.edu.au/74s3zc4ytdgr.pdf

Melbourne Uni:
http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/admissions/pdf/pgradapp/pgradapp.pdf
*need application fees aud100

Monash Uni:
email the department for form - not available from website (I have the old kit and you can get it from me by leaving yr email add here)

Swinburn Uni:
http://www.swin.edu.au/research/schols.htm

I'll post up more soon!

*Note: in the forms, you may be required to fill in potential supervisors and research topic. Try to look through the research schools to find out which supervisor you are likely to do your studies with - best if you could even exchange emails with them so they can help to support your applications.

As for proposed research topic, read up the papers that the potential supervisor wrote, and any new/interesting papers. Sometimes supervisor might have a webpage and lists out some phd/master topic - you can try to design your proposed research from there too.

Australian Postgraduate Research Scholarships

For International students:
You are eligible to apply for
1. Scholarship that covers your course fees
2. Scholarship that covers your living expenses - normally from aud15k to 19k per annum

Scholarships that covers your course fees:
1. Endeavour International Postgraduates Research Scholarships (Endeavour IRPS)
- covers your visa application fees, your health insurance and waive your course fees (around 20k per annum)
2. University's IPRS
- usually paid by the uni's Graduate School. eg. MIPRS - Monash IPRS

If the above fails - try to get the Faculty to pay 50% of the fees, and get the Department to pay 50% of the fees. Or, get the supervisor to help using the grants, or the research center he/she belongs to.

Scholarship that covers your living stipend:
1. Graduate Scholarships from University's Graduate Schools.
eg. MGS (Monash Graduate Scholarships). The amount is different every year - I think there's an increment of 3% due to the inflation rate. It's around aud19k for 2007.
2. Top up scholarships from Research Centers.
Some projects allow top up scholarships (usually industrial projects), and it's around 6k per annum. So if you get both, you will get around 25k per annum - tax-free!

However, with scholarships, there are restrictions - you can't work for more than 6 hours per week in average. If you work as a tutor, you will normally get paid at aud90 for the 1st hour, and aud60 for the repeating hours. Ask me more bout this if you are interested. Anyway, if you teaches a 2 hours tutorials and two repeating classes:
aud90*2 + aud60*4= aud420per week.
Therefore, you will get around 1680per month
the living stipend without top up is around aud1.5k per month, adding the part time job - you get around 3.2k per month to spend - more than enough for livings I suppose!

(you only get taxed for any income more than 6k per year and that only applies to your part time job since your living stipend is tax-free)

I'll discuss about the application process in different uni, and the scholarships for locals in next few posts!

and let me know if you have any any questions!

ViraLink

Interesting idea from Andy-Coates - who introduces a cool tree-structure network. http://www.andy-coates.com/blog/2007/05/22/viralink-this-will-increase-your-page-rank/
If you understand bout how google page rank works, i.e. depends on how many links and the page rank of the links to your site, you should be able to appreciate his model. Of course, like MLM, the person who initiates this will get the most benefit. However, instead of going through the troublesome business of creating rules and nice pictures - why not just stick into this tree network and step back to see how well it works!

So what do you need to do?

———copy and paste the Viralink and instructions below this line———

Below is a matrix of 120 stars, I have already added a link to my blog onto one of the stars, all you need to do is copy and paste the grid into your blog and add your own link to one of the other spare stars, and tell others to do the same!

New Addition: Leave me a message once you have added the Viralink to your site I will add your link to this grid, and each person who copies the grid from here will also link to your site!

PhD APAI Scholarship [RMIT] - Software & Pattern Recognition

If you want to do Research, enjoy software development, and are interested in
Pattern Recognition, and would like to work on a cutting edge project for a
small industry in Melbourne, and enjoy working with a friendly team, with
opportunities to work in Industry, then:

We have an APAI scholarship (approximately 26,000/ year- no tax) for the right
candidate to do a PhD. You must be a local student.

Matured aged students also very welcome.

Please contact: dinesh@rmit.edu.au

School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems, UNSW

Satellite Navigation & Positioning (SNAP) Lab
(http://www.gmat.unsw.edu.au/snap/)

Scholarships available
ARC-Linkage (APAI) “Structural Deformation Monitoring Integrating a New
Wireless Positioning Technology with GPS” 2007.5-2010.5
In this project, the student will be required to design algorithms that integrate
measurements from GPS receivers with those taken from “Locatalites”, terrestrial
transmitters produced by the innovative Australian company Locata Corporation. The
Locata technology is proving to be a world-class provider of extremely accurate
position and time synchronisation, and is currently being tested in Asia, North
America and Africa. In many applications, it can be used to support or replace GPS.
This project investigates these outdoor and indoor applications with the industry
partner Leica Geosystems. One PhD scholarship.

ARC-Linkage (APAI) “Safe Location at Home and Abroad” 2007.5-2010.5
Technologies exist to use mobile telephone signals for location. Mobile phones may
also use GPS by exploiting “assisted GPS” or A-GPS techniques. Each of these two
position determination technologies works well where the other does not, hence an
integrated approach would make for a much more robust positioning system. This
project examines the combination of the measurements from the two technologies to
provide secure location information. The application of interest to the industry partner
Seeker Wirless is monitoring the location of children to assure their safety. One PhD
scholarship.

ARC-Linkage (APAI) “Assisted GPS and Advanced Positioning For Emergency
Services” 2008-2011
GPS works well when the receiver can “see” open skies. Where there are tall
buildings (“urban canyons”) or trees, performance is diminished. This project
examines how “Assisted GPS” (AGPS) techniques can be used to assist emergency
services such as bushfire fighters and search and rescue teams. One PhD will examine
the provision of AGPS assistance, and the other will examine issues related to
automated despatch and tracking – how for instance to ensure that searchers have
covered all of an area and not duplicated search effort. Two PhD scholarships.

CRC-SI Project 1.4 “Integrating Electricity, Telecommunications and
Government Infrastructure to Deliver Precise Positioning Services in Regional
Areas” 2008-2011
The aim of this project is to develop a long-term framework for the current and future
GNSS reference network architecture and operations. The research will focus on the
examination of alternatives for the precise positioning network architecture and
approaches beyond the solutions currently offered by the major commercial suppliers.
It will also address challenges and benefits in the context of next generation GNSS
such as GPS-III and Galileo. The position is open for the development and
implementation of a software platform to enable server-based, thin-client, real-time
kinematic positioning services. One PhD scholarship.

Projects that may start beginning 2008
ARC-Discovery “Guidance for the Blind and Visually Impaired Using GPS and
WiFi” 2008-2011
Combining GPS with WiFi to provide personal navigation is an area where large
companies are starting to invest. This particular application is aimed at blind and
visually impaired (BVI) people. The aim is to produce a system that can navigate in
environments frequented by BVI, such as bus and train stations, and large shopping
centres. These environments are very challenging for GPS, hence other technologies
such as WiFi are needed for augmentation of positioning capability. One PhD
scholarship.

ARC-Discovery “Reconfigurable Search Engines for Satellite Navigation
Receivers” 2008-2011
The SNAP designed “Namuru” GPS receiver is based on a FPGA platform, and hence
its hardware is reconfigurable. In other words, where large circuits are required (such
as “search engines” for signal acquisition in satellite navigation systems), they can be
reconfigured when not in use in order to save significant chip area and power. In this
project on PhD examines the design of the individual search engines for the three
GPS signals and for the new Galileo signals, and the other PhD examines the
approaches required to reconfigure the FPGA. The aim is to produce the first genuine
application for reconfigurable computing. Two PhD scholarships.

Visit our website to find out more about the SNAP Lab and its research projects,
http://www.gmat.unsw.edu.au/snap/work/our_work.htm
We are always looking for enthusiastic, well-qualified PhD candidates with a
background in surveying/geodesy, computer science, electrical engineering,
mathematics or physics. We have many other project topics, including GPS/GNSS
technology and its applications, differential InSAR for deformation monitoring, and
multi-sensor integration. These are available only for Australian or New Zealand
citizens or Permanent Resident Visa Holders.

For all enquiries regarding postgraduate studies and research, contact the
Director of Research Assoc. Prof. Andrew Dempster, at

UNSW: PhD APAI Scholarship available - Integrating end user processes with SOA paradigm

Position opening for a PhD student:

The school of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at UNSW just
acquired a linkage grant with an industry partner Beacon IT Group
(http://www.beaconit.com.au) for a research project on Integrating end
user processes with SOA paradigm. The academic members involved at CSE,
UNSW are A/Prof. Boualem Benatallah and Dr. Hye-young Helen Paik. The
project will be conducted at CSE, UNSW in Sydney in close collaboration
with the industry partner.

The scholarship on offer through the grant is APA(I) (Australian
Postgraduate Awards -Industry) scholarship. The annual stipend for 2007
is $25,627 per annum (tax free). The stipend is paid in fortnightly
instalments. The industry partner makes upto $6,000 extra contribution
towards the project. There is also adequate funding for PhD students to
travel.

Below is a brief description of the project. Interested candidates can
contact A/Prof. Benatallah (boualem@cse.unsw.edu.au) or Dr. Paik
(hpaik@cse.unsw.edu.au) directly.

Project Title: Integrating end-user processes with SOA paradigm

Service oriented architecture and business process modelling emerged as
response to the general problems of enterprise application integration
(EAI) and enterprise information integration (EII). The technologies
offer standardised support for integrating heterogeneous resources, data
sources, and applications in the form of standardised APIs. Clearly,
professional developers now benefit from high-level and integrated
access to data, computing and application resources. However, the
benefits of SOA and business process technologies have not reached the
end-users who have some knowledge in using IT systems but are not
professional programmers. This is indeed a large population of user
base and constitutes a key component of major enterprise and end user
applications including e-government, e-business, media, e-health. For
instance, it was estimated in 2001, that in the USA alone 45 millions of
such users rely on tools such spreadsheet to visualize, manipulate, and
analyze data. This project proposes to design and develop abstractions,
models and languages in SOA paradigm which are focused on assisting the
end-users with their everyday computing tasks and business processes.
